The DBs are: Jeremy Birchall: Bass Ant Scales: Baritone Rob Scales: Tenor Stephen Douse: Tenor Paul Thompson: Counter-Tenor. Individually, the singers have performed with our greatest choirs - The Tallis Scholars, The Sixteen, Monteverdi Choir, BBC, The Shout as well as all the major UK opera companies. The DBs have performed on television, radio, the Royal Opera House (where they starred in Lorin Maazel's '1984'). Other engagements have included the country's leading festivals, music clubs and schools. There have even been private performances by Royal appointment.

Jeremy Birchall (ARCO ARCM). Jeremy's singing career has taken him to concert halls and opera houses across Europe. He’s worked at Covent Garden, English and Welsh National Opera, and with many groups specialising in early and contemporary music including the BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Singers, the Tallis Scholars, Polyphony and the Sixteen. His unusually low voice has been used in many John Tavener pieces. Particularly memorable were ‘The Apocalypse’ at the Proms, the 7-hour ‘The Veil of the Temple’ in New York, Amsterdam and at the Proms and ‘Theophany’, where his multi-tracked and transposed low notes sounded like a huge pack of whales. In recent years he has been involved with the vocal crossover group, The Shout, where his contributions are just as likely to be heard from the roof of the Royal Festival Hall or a crane in Stuttgart harbour by crowds of thousands as by audiences in theatres or concert halls. Anthony Scales (ARCM) was educated at Tiffin School and Durham University. After years of teaching unlikely subjects he studied as a postgraduate at what is now Birmingham Conservatoire and at the European Opera Centre. Recitals, 'Winterreise' at the Purcell Room, and two contemporary Scots song cycles at the Wigmore Hall, earnt favourable comment in the national and musical press. He sang frequently as a demonstration singer on BBC Schools music programmes 'Singing Together' and 'Time and Tune'. Anthony has performed over 30 operatic roles professionally, including Ping in Turandot, Sharpless in Madam Butterfly and Gianni Schicchi. In 2005 he sung the role of Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutti for Opera UK. His performance as Kassandra in Xenakis 'Oresteia' also won him critical acclaim. He sung the role of Marty in 'The Screams of Kitty Genovese' for ENO Works, and as has sung as a member of the extra chorus at the Royal Opera House and Scottish Opera. Other high profile work includes solo advertisement jingles and solos on Hollywood film soundtracks.

Robert Scales has been singing since the age of 5. Educated with his twin at Tiffin School, he became a scholar of Worcester College, Oxford. A co-founder of the Demon Barbers, he has sung with them ever since and helped make their award-winning CD. He has written lyrics for them and for a musical composed by Jeremy Birchall. He has sung solo in St Paul's Cathedral and the Queen Elizabeth Hall and in many concerts and oratorios elsewhere; he has also fronted a punk band. As a non-vocal musician he has often performed on national television.

Steve Douse (ICBM) was born in Nottingham and was awarded a Helen Hayton Monica Scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music. Since leaving the Royal Academy of Music, he has been pursuing a very busy and varied career. He has appeared regularly with the London Savoyards in their productions of the Savoy Operas at the Barbican Centre as well as with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company. He has also worked for Kent Opera and Welsh National Opera taking part in their productions of Simon Boccanegra and Billy Budd in 1998.

Paul Thompson (KCAT) was a musical prodigy, playing effortlessly on the Linoleum before he could walk, and humming tunes before he could speak. His early vocal development was nurtured at Kingston Parish Church, from where he progressed to Oratorio and Opera. He has sung at most of the major Cathedrals in the UK, and is a member of OSJ Voices (St John’s Smith Square). His abiding memory with the Demon Barbers was an appearance at the Barbican “when 2000 people give you a standing ovation, it’s quite a buzz”!
